Final Belt Drive Primaries
The image above shows three different versions of the inner primaries for rear belt drives. They characterize the three main categories of rear belt drive inner primaries:
- Right: Front chain, final belt, "dry" clutch. These primaries are equipped with the primary chain adjuster plate, the primary chain oiler tube, the primary vent line hook-up, and the primary oil return line. Note that the inner primary in the image also has a hole for the shifter axis, and hence was used on a mid-shift model.
- Center: Front belt, final belt, "dry" clutch. These inner primaries are not equipped with (nor machined for) the primary chain adjuster plate and primary chain oiler tube, nor do they have the primary breather hook-up or the primary oil return lines. They are intended for primary belt drives. The front four mounting holes (to mount the primary to the crankcase) are slightly elongated such that the primary can be moved back and forth slightly to adjust the primary belt tension. These primaries were used only on the dual-belt, FXB, FXSB, and FXDG models. One of the mounting hole bosses for the outer primary cover is milled to a shorter length to provide clearance for the primary belt (a shorter bolt must be used here to mount the outer primary). Note that the inner primary in the image also has a hole for the shifter axis, and hence was used on a mid-shift model (i.e. the FXB or FXSB).
- Left: Front chain, final belt, "wet" diaphragm clutch. This primary was used on the later models when the "wet" diaphragm clutch was introduced. Since these clutches ran in an oil-bath, there is no longer need for a primary chain oiler tube, oil return line, or vent tube hook-up. It does have the primary chain adjuster plate. Also notice that this primary in the image is equipped with a different bearing for the later tranny mainshaft, which used a bearing race pressed on to the mainshaft. Note that the inner primary in the image does not have a hole for the shifter axis, and hence was not used on a mid-shift model.

Clutch shells:
The clutch shells used on final belt drive models differ only slightly from their chain-drive counterparts in that the ring gear on the shell is mounted in a different position. HD also modified the riveting of the blocks inside the clutch shell (dry clutch), to be able to move the ring gear over, as can be seen in the image above. In the middle is a standard dry clutch shell for a front chain, final belt drive. On the left is a dry clutch shell for a front chain, rear belt drive. On the right is a dry clutch shell for a front belt, final belt drive.
(As a side note: HD never brought out a bike with final chain drive and a primary belt drive. However, HD did provide a conversion kit for this. It came with a clutch shell that had a belt pulley in stead of a chain sprocket. The starter ring gear was mounted flush with the clutch shell however (since it was intended for a rear chain drive). These clutch shells are often mistaken to be for a FX(S)B with both front and rear belt drives).
Chain drive clutch shells can be easily modified to accomodate a final belt drive starter set-up (see here). Here's a list of the part numbers of clutch shells for final belt drives:
